How to Change or Cancel Airline Tickets

Log on to the website where you purchased the tickets.

Click on "My trips," "Itinerary" or similar wording, depending on what travel agency or airline website you visit.

Click the "Change or cancel tickets" button or anything similarly worded. Follow the onscreen instructions to change or cancel your tickets, or call the number of the travel agency or airline company. The process will vary with each travel agency or airline website. For example, Orbitz has a step-by-step guide to help you change or exchange tickets, while Priceline has a contact number you must call, and United Airlines has both features you can use.

Tips and Warnings

  • To change or cancel tickets over the phone, have the information you bought the ticket with handy, such as social security number, state, address and full name.
  • Expect to pay a change fee. The average fee to change tickets costs $180.00, according to Orbitz.
  • Check your ticket information to see if your ticket can be refunded. If you purchased a refundable ticket, you may be able to get the full price of the ticket credited back to your credit card account---if you cancel within the allotted amount of time.
  • Sometimes you have to change or cancel your airline ticket due to situations that are out of your control. Most airlines and travel agencies have specific policies and guidelines on exchanging and canceling tickets, and unfortunately you will most likely either lose the money you purchased the ticket with, or have to pay an additional fee to change it. If you must change or cancel your airline ticket, you have to go through the airline or travel agency's ticket cancellation or exchange process.
