How to Travel to Boston by Train

Visit Amtrak's official website, amtrak.com. Select either One-Way or Round Trip.

Enter the departure city and select the Amtrak station you wish to leave from. Some cities have more than one station, while other cities don't have a station at all. Click Find a station and select By State/Province. Click your state and look for the closest Amtrak station.

Enter Boston as your destination city. Click on the Departs box to select a departing date. Click the Time box to select a time. Click Go. A screen displaying your travel options will appear.

Select which route option you would like to purchase and choose either a Coach or Business-class seat. Click Add to Cart. Fill out the required information, such as your name, phone number, street, address, state and ZIP. Click Continue. Enter the required credit card information. Click Continue to process your payment and finalize your order.

Tips and Warnings

  • Bring blankets and a pillow if you wish to sleep. Train rides are typically very long and can take several days, depending on where in the country you're departing from.You will stop at designated stations along the way, where you can purchase food and drink.
  • Print the receipt for your records. You will pick up your ticket at the departing station. Arrive at least an hour prior to departure to pick up the ticket.
  • You cannot have more than two pieces of carry-on luggage with you, and each piece must weigh less than 50 pounds. You can take a maximum of three pieces of checked luggage at no cost, and each piece must weigh below 50 pounds. Each additional piece of checked luggage will cost $10.
  • You must have valid photo ID to check luggage and receive your ticket.
