Attend a Craft Show and FairThe annual Highland Harvest Craft Show and Fair, in its 37th year in 2010, takes place in November. At the fair, sponsored by the City of Portland and the Highland Rim Historical Society, you'll find booths that sell only handmade items. If you have your own handmade goods, contact the city's Parks and Recreation Department to have your own booth at the fair.
Admission to the Highland Harvest Craft Show and Fair is free.
Compete in a Beauty PageantAlso held in November, the Holi-Fest Pageant is made up of seven age divisions. The divisions start with 0- to 12-month-old Holly Babies for boys and girls and extend to the 15- to 19-year-old Holi-Fest Queen. Be a spectator or a contestant in the event; the winner participates in the Holi-Fest Parade in December. As long as you haven't been married, are married or have children, you are eligible to join the competition.
Enjoy Wine TastingIf you are of drinking age, you can visit the Sumner Crest Winery where you and your girlfriends can take a private tour and tasting for a group of 10 or more people. The "The Chandelier Room" will be reserved for you and your guests and you'll have fruit and cheese trays as well as your own host or hostess to accommodate your party. Learn about different kinds of wine, about the winery and how the wine is made at Sumner Crest.
The charge for this tour is per person, and it includes a $5 coupon for the winery or gift shop, as of October 2010. Schedule tours two weeks in advance.
